Why do I need a business valuation?

Although most of us would never consider selling a car or home without some form of independent appraisal or analysis to determine market value, an amazing number of business owners sell their companies by merely estimating a price. Some base the value of their business on what they hear other companies have sold, and many simply establish a price based on their own personal financial needs.

So, what do business valuations cost these days?

In the case of many brokers, they offer “free” valuations…but, BEWARE, there are strings attached. Almost always, you will be required to list your business for sale with them. The average rate for a broker’s commission is anywhere from 5 – 10% of the sale of your business. Not exactly free, afterall!

Certified Business Appraisals may be necessary and appropriate for certain legal, IRS or estate planning purposes. These normally cost thousands of dollars. In recent cases with clients, the costs have ranged from $5,000 - $18,000 – depending on the size of the business.
